The stage songs were completely remastered for the new game and even given updated versions. The fun of nostalgia didn't end at the levels either. The story reminds players what makes the characters so much fun and brings back fond memories of the games it's paying homage to. Not only is there a 3D Sonic level, but there is also a 2D Sonic version that features its own 3D elements. Due to that, so does nostalgia, and modern Sonic gets to keep in step with his classic 2D counterpart. Like most great anniversary stories, time travel and the multiverse play a huge part in the game. The game's story is another great highlight of the game as it features a completely original story. Rather than focusing on speed and finesse, players have to pay attention to timing and quick thinking to make it through the section without mistakes. For the more daring players who love to hold down the boost button through the levels, the 2D switch changes everything. One of the best parts of the new level designs has been how smooth the game transitions to a 2D platformer in the middle of each level. Rather than implementing a complete recreation, the stages are all reworked with new areas and perspectives that new and classic fans have never seen before.
The levels found in the game are based on some of the most iconic stages in the franchise's history. Released in 2011, for the 20th anniversary, Generations offers a superb degree of level design that brings out the multiversal storyline's best. While his first major 3D story, Sonic Adventure, was a hit with fans, it would be an up and down journey for future installments. Sonic the Hedgehog has always had a love-hate relationship with 3D platforming. While some rise to the occasion and become a trendsetter, others don't find their footing as quickly. Many classic 2D platformers struggle to find success when they transition to the world of 3D.
